Schotpoort Connect transport partner of PharmaSwap in the fight against medicine waste

PharmaSwap is a medication-sharing platform initiated by pharmacists Jelmer Faber and Piter Oosterhof. On PharmaSwap, they bring together supply and demand for medicines to prevent large quantities of usable medication from being destroyed. The platform was founded in 2017 and developed by Pharmalogiq. Today, more than 1,200 pharmacists are connected.

Transparency prevents waste
PharmaSwap provides pharmacists with insight into the availability of medicines at colleague pharmacies. The platform is primarily intended for medicines nearing their expiration date or surplus medicines, for example due to a change in a patient’s treatment. This transparency encourages the use of medicines already available on the market and prevents waste. It also prevents medicines from unnecessarily ending up in waste streams. In addition, it leads to significant cost savings for healthcare.

Safe transport of medication
A key requirement for successfully exchanging medicines via the platform is safe transport between pharmacies. Since autumn 2024, PharmaSwap has partnered with Schotpoort Connect for medicine transport within the Netherlands. Schotpoort Connect has a unique nationwide network of conditioned vehicles and offers PharmaSwap a reliable solution for the safe transport of medication. In addition to qualified vehicles, all drivers are also familiar with medicine transport and GDP-trained.

Temperature conditioning and monitoring
To ensure medicine quality, proper temperature conditioning and monitoring is required. Schotpoort Connect vehicles are equipped with active climate units with temperature ranges of 2–8˚C (cold storage) and 15–25˚C (room temperature). In accordance with GDP guidelines, the temperature is actively logged. The cooling units immediately detect any deviations and automatically cool or heat until the temperature is back within the set range. This guarantees the quality of the medication.

Convenience of the sharing platform
Pharmacists can easily search for the required medication on PharmaSwap and place an order. A detailed transport order is then automatically sent to Schotpoort Connect. The sending pharmacy receives a shipping label and a track & trace link. As agreed, the shipment is collected and delivered the next working day to the receiving pharmacy. Simple, safe, and reliable.

Future
It is the joint ambition of PharmaSwap and Schotpoort Connect to collaborate in improving medication logistics flows and to further enhance the sustainability of the healthcare sector.
